Swimming pools can be classified into three broad categories based on their build design and finishing. There are concrete swimming pools, liner swimming pools and tiled swimming pools.  Each type of swimming pool has its own set of maintenance needs. In this article, discover what type of maintenance repairs you should expect with a concrete swimming pool.

Leak-detection and waterproofing

Over time, leaks may develop in some areas of a concrete swimming pool, causing the water to seep through the concrete, a phenomenon that will cause water damage to adjacent areas and litres of water loss per day. When this happens, your pool will need a leak-detection and waterproofing service. Various techniques such as hydrogen application, sonar testing or thermal imaging are used to detect the leak. Once identified, the leak is plugged using silicone or concrete emulsion injections which can be administered underwater without emptying the pool.

Painting

In terms of aesthetics, concrete swimming pools rely on the paint to keep the water looking fresh and inviting. Due to the effects of the water, dirt, chlorine and the sun's UV rays, the paint may start to fade after some time. When this happens, your pool contractor will have to repaint the entire structure. This requires that the pool is emptied and fresh non-water-based paint sprayed on. Once dry, a sealer coat is then applied and the pool refilled.

Acid wash

When concrete swimming pools get too dirty, accumulate stubborn stains or develop mould or algae, an acid wash is carried out. This service is common when a pool has not been in use for a very long time. The pool is emptied and washed using a diluted acid solution. The solution washes away all the dirt and paint, leaving behind the bare concrete surface. The pool is then waterproofed, painted and filled with water again.

Concrete spalling repair

Though rare, concrete walls of this type of pool may start to spall (chip off) in certain areas either due to impact damage or poor construction. This phenomenon creates a cavity that allows water to seep through. Such cavities also pose a danger to users of the pool. The spalling damage can be repaired without emptying the pool by administering high-pressure underwater concrete rendering or concrete sealing.

The other maintenance services that you should expect with this type of pool relate to the equipment and apply to all types of pools. They include pump repairs, filter replacements, handrails repair, pool heater servicing, water testing, and pH balancing. A pool contractor can explain to you in detail how each of the maintenance services mentioned here should be carried out and what their respective cost estimates are.
